Flames double up Arizona

In Glendale, the Calgary Flames’ Blake Coleman hit for a double on Wednesday night in a 4-2 over the Coyotes.

Jacob Markstrom made 26 saves in the Calgary win.

“I thought we could have scored a lot more than we did,” Coleman said. “It’s obviously good to make a personal contribution to the team, but more importantly we’re going into the [All-Star] break with a couple of big wins here.”

The Flames improved to 23-13-6.

“If we can round out different ways to win games, and just find other different guys to step up each night and be difference makers, we’re going to be a pretty dangerous team down the stretch,” Coleman said.

Clayton Keller and Alex Galchenyuk  were the Coyotes strikers.

Johnny Gaudreau (one point), Elias Lindholm (goal) and Matthew Tkachuk led the Calgary offnse by controlling play in the offensive zone.

“They just really play off each other while their D-men get activated,” Arizona’s  Jakob Chychrun said. “They get four guys low and it’s easy to get a little lost when they have that much movement. We just weren’t good enough at sorting that out.”

The Coyotes fell to 11-30-4.

“We think we could have definitely played a tighter game defensively and tried to manage their speed and their top line a little better,” the Coyotes’ Liam O’Brien said.

Christopher Tanev also scored for Calgary.

“We came out strong, we made good plays with the puck, getting getting pucks deep,” Tanev said. “Our forwards did a great job of working their defenseman down below the tops of circles and below the goal line, and making plays from there.”

Calgary had 26 shots on goal in the first period.

“The first period, they were all over us, it was a grind and then after that we got better throughout the game,” Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny said. “But the damage was done in this sense they wore us down.”

The Coyotes rallied from an 0-2 deficit to tie the game.

“We could have been up in the first period probably four or five [goals],” Calgary head coach Darryl Sutter said.

Karel Vejmelka made 46 saves in the Coyotes loss.
