Flames defeat New Jersey, 5-4, in shootout

In Calgary Sunday, the Flames’ Matthew Tkachuk was credited with the game-winner in the skills competition as Calgary defeated the New Jersey Devils, 5-4.

“Honestly I just have three moves that I’ve done since I’ve been however (old),” Tkachuk said. “I don’t know. I just have three moves in my head and I look at the shooters before me and decide when I touch the puck.

“I’ve only used one out of my three moves so far. I’m probably going to have to switch it up here soon.”

Mike Smithmade 26 saves as the Flames have now won three straight.

Michael Frolik, Micheal Ferland, Sean Monahan, and Michael Stone scored for the Flames who moved to 8-6-1 on the campaign.

“We’ve been home for a while now, but I think we’re just going into third periods and we know how critical the games are,” Ferland said. “I think we’re getting better at learning how to win games.”

Four different skaters struck for the Devils including Taylor Hall, Ben Lovejoy, Brian Gibbons and Andy Greene.

“We were realistically going for four [points] out of six but we found a way to get a point and that’s important,” Greene said. “We came out of it 1-1-1 so I guess it’s an OK road trip. We wanted more, and that’s a good thing. We’ve just got to put it past us.”

Keith Kinkaid made 30 saves in taking the loss for the Devils.

“We’re having fun creating offense this year. You don’t really think of the Devils as a high-powered offense, but we are showing people that we can score and create chances at a good pace,” Hall said after his Devils potted four in the loss.
