Flames continue to roll through east with 4-1 over Carolina

In Raleigh Sunday, the visiting Calgary Flames continued their campaign through the east with a convincing 4-1 win over the Hurricanes.

It was the seventh straight win for Calgary.

Matt Stajan scored his first goal and Dougie Hamilton scored the first of his two on the night in the first period for a 2-9 lad.

“It’s always nice to contribute,” Stajan said. “You work so hard to do the little things that you don’t always get praised for, but the guys in here know what kind of job we do. I think our fourth line has created a lot of energy, but it’s nice to get one.”

Matthew Tkachuk also struck for the Flames who improved to 25-16-4.

“I definitely thought the road trip was all we wanted,” Tkachuk said. “You never go into a road trip and say, ‘I want to win every single one of them.’ You just go one game at a time. Looking back, it’s a real good road trip going into the break.”

Lee Stempniak, had the lone goal for the Hurricanes to make it 4-1.

Mike Smith got the win on 38 saves.

“I thought (Smith) was the best when we got to the 4-0 mark and he made some real good saves,” Flames head coach Glen Gulutzan said. “The third, when they were pushing, he came up big.”

Scott Darling made 26 saves in taking the loss.

“I don’t think we were engaged in the game, period,” Canes head coach Bill Peters said. “I don’t think we had much emotional engagement to the game. I hope it’s flu-related, I really do. We were slow, lethargic. Slow with the puck, slow making decisions. Those nights we’re not the hardest-working team — I don’t know our record, but it wouldn’t be flattering.”
