Flames burn bright in four-goal second period in win over Kings

In Calgary Thursday night, the Flames used a four-goal second period to a 4-3 win over the visiting Los Angeles Kings.

Sean Monahan, Troy Brouwer, Mark Jankowski, and Micheal Ferland struck for goals in the middle frame.

“We know we’ve got all the pieces in this room,” Monahan said. “It’s just a matter of playing like it. Tonight’s a good step for us. We have to keep building from here.”

The outburst erased a 2-0 lead the Kings had built in the first period on goals from Tanner Pearson and Derek Forbort.

“We got away from our game and we let them play theirs,” Pearson said. “We turned pucks over and they’re a quick-strike team and that’s the kind of game I think they’re looking for and they capitalized on it.

Pearson scored in the third period as well to tighten it up late.

“We started to press,” Monahan said. “When we get the momentum in games we kind of stay with it and line after line keeps rolling. That’s when pucks usually go in.”

Mike Smith got the win for the Flames on 28 saves.

“I think we just stuck with it,” Ferland said. “We came in and we regrouped as a team. We weren’t happy with our first period. We knew we had more.”

Jonathan Quick made 37 saves.

“We were really good for 10 (minutes) and the next 30 we were really bad,” LA head coach John Stevens said. “We lost a lot of puck battles. Bottom line for me is, you’re not going to win on the road against a good team with a goalie, half your [defensemen] and half your forwards. That’s kind of what happened tonight.”
