Rapid Solicitors Hull Stingrays registered a fantastic 5-2 victory over Nottingham Panthers at Hull Arena in the Elite League.
Canadian goaltender David Brown made 48 saves in a man of the match display to backstop Stingrays to two huge points as they returned to winning ways at home.
Panthers missed a chance to take the lead at 10.01 when Robert Lachowicz had his penalty shot saved by the brilliant Brown. Dominic Osman made him pay as he tipped in a Will Frederick shot to nudge Stingrays ahead at 14.57 on the powerplay.
Panthers levelled, though, just 28 seconds later through Chris Higgins and a powerplay marker from Robert Farmer put them ahead at 27.19. A rocket shot from Eric Galbraith (29.44) tied it up at 2-2 before a Carl Lauzon breakaway at 36.31 saw Stingrays back in front.
Stingrays, who lost Jordan Knox through injury for the third period, extended their lead at 46.48 courtesy of Jordan Mayer’s powerplay marker and Zach Hervato added the insurance with an empty-net goal 113 seconds from time.
Player-coach Omar Pacha said: “That was our worst first period of the year but Browny was huge and really helped us out. We got a big first period from him, it was his best period of the year and that is why he is here to save us when we are struggling like that.
“It wasn’t a pleasant conversation in the break but after that we competed, we worked hard, we kept them to the outside and were a lot better. We responded and it was a big two points.
“The guys showed a lot of character and we were down a body too but that is the mentality we have here, to be competing all the time. They gave everything they had and I am really proud of the guys.
“Knoxy is going to be re-evaluated on Monday. He was a huge loss for us. You saw in the first two periods he was blocking shots everywhere and sacrificing the body. You could see he wasn’t feeling well and wasn’t himself so we decided it was best for him to skip that third period.”
