Five-goal third sends Chicago to rout of Red WIngs

In Chicago, the Blackhawks blew open a tight 2-1 game in the third period when they scored five goals en route to a 7-2 win over the Detroit Red wings on Sunday.

Patrick Kane potted his 400th NHL goal in the win.

“When I was getting toward the top of the [face-off] circle, I saw [Hronek] was going to try and slide, tried to slow up, make a move and hit a spot with my shot,” Kane said. “Nice to see it go in, but no matter the milestone, you’re always just trying to make the right play out there.”

Kevin Lankinen made 44 saves to get the win in a busy match for him.

Sam Gagner scored for Detroit when the game was still contested, and Evgeny Svechnikov added lipstick marker in the third period when the game was out hand.

“We pushed back even after they scored a couple of the goals, the third and fourth goals,” Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill said. “We had moments of pushback, but you just can’t give up easy chances. That’s the thing like you’ve got to be able to push without giving up easy chances. Unfortunately, that’s not what happened tonight.”

Ryan Carpenter struck for two goals for Chicago.

“It’s always nice,” Carpenter said. “When I was out with [COVID-19], that’s always tough, but the boys were winning. It’s always nice to contribute.”

Nikita Zadorov picked up his first goal for the Hawks since being picked up from the Colorado Avalanche.

“I don’t think it was a perfect game by any means, but we were pretty tight defensively, especially the first two periods,” Blackhawks head coach Jeremy Colliton said. “We would’ve loved to create a little more, but overall we did what we had to do, and when we finally broke through, we relaxed and began to make more plays, execution went up.”

Dominik Kubalik and Alex DeBrincat scored to make it 6-2 and 7-2 to end the outburst in the final 20 minutes.

Thomas Greiss made 25 saves in the loss.

“We can’t give up odd-man rushes and leave our goalie out to dry,” Gagner said. “[We] have to find a way to buckle down defensively there. It’s the only way we’re going to be able to create and come back in that game is to make sure we’re solid defensively.”
