In Elmont, the Philadelphia Flyers’ Samuel Errson made 25 saves, including four on penalties, in a 1-0 win over the New York Islanders on Saturday.
“I think it’s huge for us, just not to lose the momentum we built up here five games before,” Ersson said. “With this win, we get right back into the win column and keep building on what we’ve been doing since the start of this season.”
Tyson Foerster scored the game’s only marker in the fourth round of penalties, for the win.
“I was talking to [Flyers No. 1 goalie Carter] Hart before [my shot],” Foerster said. “Usually, after practice, I mess around with Hart, and I do that move quite a bit. So, he just told me, ‘Yeah, do it,’ and it ended up working.”
The Flyers moved to 11-9-1.
“We struggled in the first three or four minutes,” Flyers coach John Tortorella said. “I don’t think anyone really wanted the puck, it looked like. We knew they were banged up on the blue line. Their defense had played a lot of minutes yesterday. So, we were just trying to get it in and start our forecheck. Took us three or four minutes to get there, but once we did, I don’t think we looked back.”
The Isles dropped to 8-6-6 after having their three-game winning streak snapped.
“I thought the effort was outstanding,” New York coach Lane Lambert said. “I’m proud of our team. We’ve played a lot of hockey lately, traveled a lot lately, including last night. The four defensemen that played last night (5-3 win at Ottawa Senators) played a ton of minutes. And I thought it wasn’t necessarily pretty at times. But I thought we gutted it out, and we battled, and I give our team full marks.”
Ilya Sorokin made 40 saves in his shutout loss.
“I thought it was just one of those games where you’ve just got to bear down and try and keep it simple,” the Islanders’ Noah Dobson said. “Keep the shift short, and we battled, competed, and fought for a hard-fought point.”
