BASINGSTOKE UK: The Bison now have the EPL title very much in their sights with three weekends of the regular season remaining.
The Herd have not won a championship since 1993, but their 23 years of hurt could well be about to end, if they can win three of their remaining five games.
This is split between three on home ice against Hull, Swindon and Guildford, while they have two road games away at Telford and Milton Keynes.
The Bison are currently nine points clear of their title challengers Guildford and Peterborough with both of them having games in hand
First up in the final five games is a visit from Hull with the Pirates looking for their first win in Basingstoke this season on Saturday.
The Herd will be out to stop them and carry on the way they played last weekend when they beat the Telford Tigers 3-1.
Aaron Connolly grabbed a brace in the first period of the game, thanks to a lovely feed and Ciaran Long and a tip on the Declan Balmer blue line bullet.
Rene Jarolin added a third goal in the final session, before Telford replied from Dan Davies.
The Tigers tried to tie the game as they pulled their goalie, but when Blahoslav Novak started punching Joe Baird Telford had to see out the game shorthanded.
For the visit of Hull, Basingstoke hope to have top forward Joe Greener back in their line-up after serving a two game ban and Alan Lack is also hoping to ice.
This would leave the team only minus Grant Rounding as they head into the final two weekends of the season.
“I was really pleased with the team effort we showed against Telford and Aaron (Connolly) our captain led by example. If we can do the same again this weekend I would like to think we would take another win.
“We know Hull will not make it easy for us and will work hard, bit with just a one game weekend it is important we take the two points,” said Bison head coach Doug Sheppard.
