BRATISLAVA, Czech Republic (August 11th) – The Muskegon Lumberjacks are proud to announce that Jack’s defenseman, Mitch Eliot, has been named the captain of the United States U18 Select Team for the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup.
The Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup, co-hosted annually by the Czech Republic and Slovakia, is a U18 international tournament consisting of eight of the world’s top hockey nations. Historically, the United States has medaled in 12 of the 24 years, since the cup’s establishment in 1991. Of those medals, however, only one has been of the highest regards.
Last year, the United States earned a bronze medal in an overtime thriller against a strong Swedish Team. This year, with the Lumberjack’s own, Mitch Eliot, wearing the “C”, the quest to capture a second gold medal for the red, white, and blue is underway.
Eliot, a Gross Pointe native, is entering his second season with the Jacks. The Michigan State University commit helped the Lumberjacks reach their first ever Clark Cup Final last season. According to Lumberjack assistant coach Todd Robinson, Eliot is, “A hard-nosed, two way defenseman that plays with reckless abandonment.” Appearing in 67 games last season, Eliot’s veteran leadership will likely be a key contributor in the upcoming Jacks 2015-16 campaign.
