UMass Lowell’s Joe Gambardella tied the Riverhawks’ East Regional semifinal at Albany’s Times Union Center with Yale in the third period and won it 1:37 into overtime.
The Riverhawks took the lead early in the first period on a Michael Fallon goal, but Yale rallied back behind goals from Frankie DiChiara and Ryan Hitchcock.
Kevin Boyle, UMass Lowell’s goalie, made 33 saves in the win. Yale’s Hobey Baker-finalist netminder Alex Lyon made 28 saves in the loss.
The Riverhawks play the top-ranked team in the country in Sunday night’s regional finals. Quinnipiac nursed a 1-0 lead into the third period, but blew the game open with a three goals for a 4-0 win over Rochester Institute of Technology.
Travis St. Denis’s power-play goal in the first period goes down as the game winner. Soren Jonzzon scored the last two goals for the Bobcats, the last into an empty net. Scott Davidson scored 2:27 into the third period to give Quinnipiac some breathing room.
Michael Garteig made 27 saves to earn the shutout.
