TULSA, Okla. – The Colorado Eagles watched their seven-game winning streak come to an end in a 5-3 loss to the Tulsa Oilers on Friday. The Oilers scored four straight goals to rally from a 3-1 deficit, as goaltender Jake Hildebrand stopped 41 of the 44 shots he faced in the victory.
Tulsa would be the first team to light the lamp when an injury to Gabriel Verpaelst took the Eagles defenseman out of the play and allowed the Oilers to put the puck into the low slot. Tulsa forward Mark Bennett would collect that pass and snap home the game’s first goal just 1:20 into the contest to put the Oilers on top 1-0.
The Eagles would square things up when forward Ben Storm bashed a rebound in the crease past Hildebrand to tie the game at 1-1 at the 7:50 mark of the first period.
Colorado would earn its first lead of the night when defenseman Jake Marto skated behind the Tulsa net before feeding the puck into the slot for Eagles forward Michael Joly, who would bury his 20th goal of the year and put the Eagles up 2-1 with 2:01 remaining in the opening frame.
Defenseman Collin Bowman would grow the Eagles lead to 3-1 just 5:20 into the second period when he dragged the puck across the top of the crease before feeding it into the back of the net.
Just 1:26 later, the Oilers would cut into the deficit when forward Kale Kessey pushed a rebound into the cage to trim Colorado’s advantage to 3-2.
Tulsa would notch its second consecutive goal at the 9:50 mark of the middle frame when defenseman Tommy Vannelli bested Cannata with a wrister to level the score at 3-3.
Defenseman Chris Joyaux would break the deadlock 8:15 into the third period when he stepped into a slapshot from the top of the left circle to put Tulsa on top 4-3.
The Eagles would pull Cannata in favor of the extra attacker, but Garrett Ladd would add the exclamation point with an empty-net goal to extend the Oilers lead to 5-3 with 18 seconds left in regulation.
Cannata suffered the loss in net for the Eagles, surrendering four goals on 40 shots, as the Eagles went 0-for-3 on the power play and 1-for-1 on the penalty kill.
