LOVELAND, Colo. – Colorado’s win against the Norfolk Admirals lifted them to an early season Western Conference lead.With the decisive 6 to 3 victory in the first-ever meeting of the Eagles against the Admirals, Colorado, remains a perfect 3 and 0 on the season with 6 pts.
Gage Ausmus scored at the 3:04 mark of the first period with assists from Drayson Bowan and Jake Marto to give the Eagles an early lead which they never surrendered throughout the remainder of the contest.
Eagle’s Michael Joly and Admiral’s Alex Pompeo traded 2-minute minor penalties in the period and with the score 1 to 0 for the Eagles, the second period would start the Colorado onslaught.
Brady Shaw upped the lead to 2 to 0 at 2:17 of the middle frame stole an errant pass
from the Admiral defender and beat Norfolk Goalie Jamie Murray with assistance from Jake Marchment. Just 32 seconds later Michael Joly gabbed the puck in front of the Norfolk net and slid it past Murray for 3 to 0 Eagles lead.
Less than a minute later Norfolks Tim Daly stopped the Eagles shutout with a shot off a Brittain rebound to bring the Eagles lead back to 2 goals.
Later in the second period, the Colorado Eagles were finally able to break through on the man advantage an score a power-play goal, their first of the season, when Collin Bowman sent a slapper past Murray for the 4 to 1 lead. But the Eagles were not done yet in the second period as reigning ECHL Defenseman of the Year, Matt Register, upped the advantage to 5 to 1 at the 11:10 mark.
With a 4 goal lead to start the third period Colorado let their guard down early allowing a turnover to the Admirals who quickly capitalized on it with Trevor Mingoia cutting the lead to 5 to 2 only 37 seconds into the period.
Brady Shaw once again came up big for the Eagles one-timing the puck off a faceoff win past the stunned Admirals goalie for the 6 to 2 lead.
The final tally of the game, however, was in favor of the visitors courtesy of Joonas Lyytinen with under two minutes to play in the contest when he beat Britain on a shot from the point for a 6 to 3 Colorado victory.
These same two teams will reprise the action tonight at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland Co. Game time is 7:05 P.M.
