Eagles battle back to tie series against the Grizzlies

2016KellyCupLOVELAND, Colo. – It took 102 minutes and 31 seconds for the Colorado Eagles to tie their Kelly Cup series against the Utah Grizzlies. Eagle forward Darryl Bootland beat Utah goalie Ryan Faragher at the 17:29 mark of the the third overtime period to send the tired, but happy Colorado faithful home from the Budweiser Events Center just before midnight on  Sunday night.

Utah started off the scoring with a goal from T.J. Syner with assists to Phil Pietrino and Ryan Hayes in the first period, answered by a three goals in 90-seconds outburst

from the Eagles.

At 11:33 Jake Marto notched a Power Play goal assisted by Colin Bowman and Curt Gogol followed thirty seconds later by Colin Bowmans tally assisted by Channing Boe at 12:03. Not to be outdone by the heroics of the two offensive minded defensemen, Eagles forward Everett Sheen grabbed a pass from Giffen Nyren just a minute later to drive Utah net minder Mark Owuya from the game and give Colorado a three to one lead.

Colorado saw that lead reduced in  the second frame when Utah’s Ryan Hayes scored the only goal of the period  at 4:58 while Owuya’s replacement, Ryan Faragher, kept the nets clean for the Grizzlies as the Eagles hung on to a one goal advantage at the second intermission.

At the  40-second mark of the third period Ryan Hayes tied the score for the Grizzlies at three apiece getting assists from Erik Higby and Shayne Taker. Daryl Bootland gave the Eagles back their one goal advantage at 3:54 only to be matched again by Utah as Charles Sarault scored a few minutes later. The score remained four all at the end of regulation.

In the first extra period Utah had the best of the play throwing eleven shots on goal to Colorado’s seven but none got past Eagles goalie Kris Lazaruk.

Overtime session number two was the reverse as Colorado was able to tally thirteen shots on Faragher with Utah only mustering six shots on goal but neither team scored.

Darryl Bootland’s goal won it five to four for the Eagles in the third period of bonus hockey – sending the Eagles to Salt Lake City next week for games three through five.
