Dzingel, Canes sign two-year deal

In a reasoned decision, forward Ryan Dzingel inked a two-year deal with the Carolina Hurricanes early Friday morning.

The contract is worth a reported $6.75 million contract with a payout of $3.25 million in the first year, 2019-20, and and $3.5 million the following year.

“Ryan has proven that he can be an impact player offensively, putting up bigger numbers over each of his three full-time NHL seasons,” Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell said. “His speed, skill and vision make him an excellent fit for our forward group and our style of play. At 27, he’s just entering his prime and certainly had options coming off a 26-goal season, so we’re happy he’s chosen to be a part of the Carolina Hurricanes.”

At 29, when the contract expires, the hope is the collective bargaining agreement between the NHL Players Association and the NHL will end up with a higher salary cap that the one hampering teams and players from making longer term deals.

A two-year stint in Raleigh will give Dzingel a chance to prop up his numbers and go for a longer term deal while still young enough to make a splash.

Dzingel was picked up by the Columbus Blue Jackets from the Ottawa Senators at the trade deadline. The move was made to bolster the Jackets’ playoff run; they won their first ever playoff series in a stunning sweep of the Tampa Bay Lightning but then were bounced by the Boston Bruins in the next round.

Dzingel was drafted by the Senators in the 2011 Entry Draft; he has 138 points on 66 goals

He has added three goals and four points in 24 playoff games.
