
A good start for the Stars saw them dominate possession early and generate a number of quality chances to test Shane Owen. This momentum carried over into the first powerplay of the night, with Mason Alderson being called for slashing.
Fluid passing in the Flyers zone saw the puck come close to crossing the goal line, but a Flyers defenseman quickly covered the puck with his hand to clear the danger. This subsequently gave the Stars a penalty shot, which Spencer Naas narrowly failed to convert on.
Despite a strong powerplay for Dundee, including Otto Nieminen ringing the off the post, the Flyers were able to kill the man advantage.
Fife got on the board first, with a takeaway in the Stars’ zone leading to Johan Porsberger firing the puck into the top corner past Emil Kruse at 08:09.
In a strange sequence of events, the Flyers thought they had scored at 11:11 to take a 2-0 lead. However, the referee waved it off and play continued to the other side of the ice, with Dundee emerging on a three-on-one breakaway. Shane Owen managed to make the stop to get a whistle, with a review following which showed Johan Porsberger’s shot hitting the backpost of the Stars’ net and retroactively making the score 2-0.
Brad Schoonbaert responded less than a minute later at 12:02, capitalising on extended pressure in the offensive zone and sending a shot from in close past Owen to make it 2-1. A scrum ensued shortly after the whistle, leading to a number of roughing penalties being handed out to set up a tense second period.
After a promising start to the second period by the Stars, Drydn Dow got the equaliser at 27:00 with his first goal of the season. Thanks to traffic in front of Owen, and Hampus Olsson providing a screen, the Captain fired a shot from the wall that found its way into the back of the net to even the score at 2-2.
After a bad change by the Flyers, Morten Jurgens sent the puck up the ice and sent Spencer Naas on a breakaway. The forward made no mistake, and fired a shot under the five-hole of Owen for his fourth goal in as many games and gave Dundee their first lead of the night at 33:01.
Jaka Ĺ turm responded at 37:01, tipping a shot from the Fife blueline past Kruse to even the score at 3-3. Keaton Jameson regained the lead for the Flyers twenty seconds later at 37:21, firing home a rebound after an initial save by Kruse, making it 4-3 heading into the second intermission.
Brad Schoonbaert scored his second goal of the game at 47:33, finishing off a sequence of smooth passing as he fired a one-timer from the slot past Shane Owen to once again equalise.
Tensions began to boil over late in the third, with Kris Inglis dropping the gloves with Jeremy Masella, and Matt Boudens getting involved with Fife captain Garet Hunt. The powerplay that followed for the Stars once again came close to finding the back of the net, with Shane Owen being forced into action to deny a strong Stars offense.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the time that remained, as overtime was required to determine a winner. After some back-and-forth action on both ends of the ice, Matt Berry was the overtime hero, as he stripped a Flyer of the puck and fired a shot past Owen at 63:52.
