Ducks win in overtime, 3-2 Anaheim wins first OT in eight tries

It took a while but the Anaheim Ducks finally won a game in overtime, 3-2, over the Arizona Coyotes Friday in Anaheim.

Ondrej Kase scored with 36 seconds left in the extra session to give the Ducks their first win in OT.

“I saw (Mike) Smith with the puck. I don’t know what happened though,” Kase said. “I was surprised. I saw the puck and just shot it.”

Smith (32 saves) made the initial save on the shot but his stick broke and he was unable to handle the puck safely.

“The way things are going right now, my stick breaks, I didn’t get anything on it, and it ends up in the back of the net,” Smith said. “I tried to do too much.”

John Gibson made 21 saves for the win, the first eight tries in overtime for Anaheim.

“We finally got the monkey off our back. It’s been too long and too many points that went by the wayside. Tonight we found a way to get it done. It’s nice to see a young kid, who had lots of chances in the game, deliver in overtime,” Anaheim head coach Randy Carlyle said.

The Coyotes, who fell to 11-22-6, got goals from Martin Hanzal and Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

Joseph Cramarossa and Chris Wagner were the Anaheim goal scorers in regulation.

The Coyotes have lost nine straight.

“Trying to keep the play going, I guess. During this string, we got ourselves in position where we battled hard, and a mistake beats us,” Arizona head coach Dave Tippett said of the skid.
