In Anaheim Sunday, John Gibson made 23 saves to lead the Ducks to a 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Corey Perry and Chris Stewart scored for the Ducks in the second period to erase a 1-0 Pens lead.
“To put two together now, that’s a big thing for our group,” Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf said. “It’s been a little bit of a struggle here, the last little while. It’s nice to see us win a tight game against a good hockey team.”
In a frustrating season thus far, Sunday’s win was a quality effort.
“It was tough both ways to get scoring chances,” Penguins coach Mike Johnston said. “You could see it was that type of game from the beginning with the low shots, low scoring chances, but we had a few right at the end too. You just have to capitalize on the chances we get in games like that, and I thought they capitalized and we didn’t.”
Olli Maatta picked up the Pens’ lone goal.
“I think we need to find ways to be more consistent,” Pittsburgh defenseman Ben Lovejoy said. “I think there have been a couple of nights where we have really struggled with our starts and that has put us behind right away. Tonight we played a good Ducks team and we couldn’t figure out a way to solve John Gibson more than once.”
Marc-Andre Fleury made 23 saves in the loss and only Sidney Crosby of the Pens’ big scorers gained a point on the night.
“That was great,” Perry said. “Our guys did a great job containing their two big men over there. When you can do that, you’re going to be successful on a lot of nights.”
