The Anaheim Ducks completed the rally Sunday night when they won their fifth straight Pacific Division Title.
Shea Theodore scored on a breakaway with less than a minute gone in extra time to
defeat the Los Angeles Kings, 4-3.
“It’s a credit to the players, who came together and achieved it,” Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. “It’s only one part, though. The most important part comes next.”
Nate Thompson forced the overtime when he tied the game 3-3 just past the midway point of the third period.
Jonathan Bernier got the win Sunday on 15 saves.
Dustin Brown, Drew Doughty and Kyle Clifford scored for LA.
“We hung in there. I’ve said that lots. The bottom line is we didn’t score enough goals this year,” Kings head coach Darryl Sutter said.
The Kings missed the playoffs again and their captain, Anze Kopitar, is expecting changes for next season.
“It’s tough to see your friends and the players you’ve won with go, but if that’s the case, you can’t really mope about it,” Kopitar said. “You have to create new memories.”
Antoine Vermette and Patrick Eaves also scored for the Ducks.
“It’s a clean slate now. It’s one game at a time. We need to review our season as individuals and get ready,” Anaheim’s Andrew Cogliano said of the playoff.
The Ducks will face the Calgary Flames in the opening series.
