Ducks rally with five straight goals, down Sabres

In Anaheim, the visiting Buffalo Sabres took a 2-0 into the late4 stages of the first period.

And that was about it.

The Ducks reeled off five unanswered goals to hand the Sabres their first regulation loss, 5-2.

Adam Henrique struck for two goals in the win.

“We just need to stick to the game plan and we’ll be fine,” Sabres forward Vladimir Sobotka said. “The first six games we played a full 60 minutes and we won the game. Right now, I didn’t think we played all 60 and we got the result.”

John Gibson made 31 saves to get the Ducks to 5-2-0 on the season.

Jack Eichel and Victor Olofsson scored in the opening frame to give the Sabres the 2-0 lead before 17 minutes had gone.

The power play was anemic for the Sabres as they went 1-for-7 with the extra skater.

“I would have liked to see us get a few more power plays than penalty kills, but ultimately I thought we did a good job of sticking up for one another without getting carried away,” Ducks forward Ryan Getzlaf said.

Getzlaf had a power play goal in the win, the first such goal for the Ducks this season.

“There is still lots of work to do [on the power play], but it’s just a relief to get one in there for everyone because it becomes a focus, and with that comes a lot of unneeded pressure,” Ducks coach Dallas Eakins said. “We have an expectation there that is a little bit different, but we had worked hard on that for a number of days and good on that unit for sticking with it.”

Jakob Silfverberg and Rickard Rakell also scored for the Anaheim.

“We lost the way,” Buffalo head coach Ralph Krueger said. “It seemed like the no-goal worked, almost, against us versus for us. We let our guard down there, the next shift they got the 2-1 goal. We really lost our way then, right up into the third period.”

Linus Ullmark made 26 saves in the loss.

“[The Ducks] are a team that wants to get us going, trick us into playing their game. Unfortunately, they were successful,” Ullmark said.
