The Arizona Coyotes had a three-goal lead Thursday night and just could not hold on.
The Anaheim Ducks’ Rickard Rakell made the Coyotes pay when he scored with less
than four minutes remaining in regulation to give the Ducks a 5-4 win.
“We had a pretty slow start to this game, but we still had a good feeling after the first period (down 2-1),” Rakell said. “We just wanted to restart and focus on the things we could do better. When we got the first goal and second goal (to pull within 4-3 in the second period) I thought we changed the momentum.”
Andrew Coglianohad the game-tying goal and Corey Perry struck twice for the Ducks.
Max Domi, Clayton Keller, Anthony Duclair, and Christian Fischer scored for the Coyotes.
The game was Rick Tocchet’s first as bench boss for the Coyotes.
“Up 4-1 and we started to back off,” Tocchet said. “It’s hard to win in this league, really hard. You got to be able to play hard and I thought we started to back up. Certain individuals backing up. Couple of key players making some bad giveaways and that’s what happened.”
John Gibson got the win on saves.
Ondrej Kase also scored for the Ducks.
