In Anaheim, Mason McTavish scored his second goal of the game with 6:42 left in regulation to rally the Ducks back for a 4-4 tie with the San Jose Sharks on Friday night.
That was enough to get the two teams to extra time, where John Klingberg scored 68 seconds into the extra session for a 5-4 win to Anaheim.
“I needed it,” Klingberg said. “It’s always fun to score goals, so it felt good.”
Anthony Stolarz made 37 saves for the Ducks win.
“Good to see him put some points up tonight,” Anaheim coach Dallas Eakins said of McTavish. “He’s out there because he’s earned trust; not only the trust of me, but he’s got the trust of our coaching staff and he has the trust of his teammates.”
Anaheim improved to 12-24-4.
Timo Meier hit for a double for the Sharks.
“We find ways to give them chances, even though we outplayed and outshot them (41-29),” Meier said. “We just find ways to lose. We had plenty of chances. We could’ve had one or two more.”
San Jose dropped to 12-20-8.
The Sharks took a 2-0 lead in the first period, you already know where this is going, on strikes by Matt Nieto and Steven Lorentz.
“I like a lot of our game tonight, but I think we thought it would be easy,” San Jose coach David Quinn said.
Trevor Zegras and Ryan Strome scored in the opening period to get the Ducks even, 2-2.
Meier and McTavish traded goals for a 3-2 tie.
“Anytime you even score one, it’s really special and to be a difference-maker in a game is pretty cool,” McTavish said.
Meier’s second of the game came 14 seconds after the 3-3 tie to send the game to the third wit the Sharks up, 4-3.
Kaapo Kahkonen made 24 saves in the Sharks loss.
