Ducks power past Ottawa, 4-1

In Anaheim Sunday, the Ducks scored three goals off the power play and overwhelmed the Ottawa Senators in a 5-1 win.

Antoine Vermette, Corey Perry, Joseph Cramarossa, Nick Ritchie, and Sami Vatanen  all scored for the Ducks.Anaheim Ducks

“We know the importance of [special teams],” Vermette said. “We pointed it out before the game, we wanted to make sure that special teams made a difference in the game. Usually, you don’t get too many chances and we wanted to make sure we capitalized on those and tonight, we were sharp.”

Ryan Dzingel  was the lone goal scorer for the Sens who lost a night after a tough loss to the Los Angeles Kings Saturday.

Mike Condon got the start for the Sens but yielded three goals on just 13 shots and was relieved by Andrew Hammond in the first period.

“It was a no-show all around. Not good,” Senators coach Guy Boucher said. “We wanted to rebound from yesterday (a 4-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings). We played a hard game yesterday and it didn’t turn out our way but we didn’t give much to the opponent and played a physical game. Today, we didn’t play a physical game at all.”

The loss to the Kings was also highlighted by three power play goals surrendered by the Senators.

“It’s tough to win games like that,” Senators captain Erik Karlsson said. “I just think that’s the way it goes sometimes, unfortunately. We have to do a better job of being in lanes and clearing rebounds.”

John Gibson made 21 saves to pick up the win for the Ducks who improved to 15-9-5 on the season.

“I thought the second period, which has been a tough period for us from a stand point of line changes and all that and momentum swings. We got through the second period and we were in a good position with our power play. And our penalty killing came up big and made some big kills. And that was really the story of the game.” Anaheim head coach Randy Carlyle said of his club’s effort in the middle frame.
