Ducks open big lead, cruise past Coyotes, 5-2 Ducks build 4-0 lead en route to win

In Tempe, the Anaheim Ducks scored four straight goals on Tuesday night to take a 4-0 lead over the Coyotes through the early third period.

Despite a brief rally from Arizona the Ducks added a late empty-net strike from Adam Henrique for a 5-2 win.

Anthony Stolarz made 37 saves in the Anaheim win.

The Ducks moved to 14-29-5.

The Ducks run of goals started in the first period on a strike form Frank Vatrano for a 1-0 lead.

The Coyotes dropped to 15-28-5 on their 12th loss in 14 games.

“I did not like our start; we were a little bit sloppy on our assignments defensively,” Arizona coach Andre Tourigny said. “They’re a young team, but they have a lot of skills and they took advantage of it.”

Troy Terry upped the lead to 2-0 in the middle frame.

“I had a lot of space to get some speed going,” Terry said. “That’s kind of exciting, because it’s tough to get the puck with space in the National Hockey League. When there’s a delayed penalty and you can take advantage of that, it’s nice.”

Terry was scoreless in the previous 16 games.

“Troy’s our best player, and it was great to see him score because it’s been a while now despite getting excellent chances every night,” Ducks coach Dallas Eakins said. “But that’s Troy. He has that ability to go through people, he’s unbelievable at putting pucks underneath guys’ sticks and controlling it that way. I think he could have easily added a couple more.”

Cam Fowler scored the next two Ducks goals with the first hit off the power play for a 3-0 lad in the second.

“When somebody takes a penalty like that on one of our guys, it’s up to us as a power play to make them pay for that,” Fowler said. “I think it kind of rallied our guys.”

Fowler’s second was in the third for the 4-0 lead.

Barrett Hayton and Nick Schmaltz  scored in the third period to make the score 4-2 before Henrique hit for the 5-2 final.

Connor Ingram made 38 saves in the loss.

“There was about [a minute] there in the second where we gave up two goals and that broke the game a little bit,” Tourigny said. “But we were able to crawl back, we had a lot of fight and the guys never quit.”
