Ducks’ offense still AWOL in 5-2 loss to Islanders

In Brooklyn, the Anaheim Ducks found themselves on the wrong end of a 5-2 decision with the New York Islanders.

A good first period went horribly wrong when Travis Hamonic and Brock Nelson scored 43 seconds apart late in the period to erase a 1-0 Ducks lead and the Isles added goals from Cal Clutterbuck, Josh Bailey and Matt Martin added goals in the win.

“Tonight we went to the net, we shot pucks and we got some breaks,” Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. “We did some of those things the last few games we lost too. It was good to see the guys get rewarded.”

New York went to the net and the Ducks once again failed to generate much offense in a stale effort.

Carl Hagelin scored a rare goal (his third of the year) and Josh Manson accounted for the Anaheim offense.

Frederik Andersen got the start for Anaheim and yielded three goals on 11 shots and was relieved by John Gibson.

“Knowing Freddie well enough, you can tell when he’s on,” Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said of Andersen. “Pucks were bouncing off him earlier that normally he would smother and control. He didn’t have it tonight. If we’d have gotten out of the first period [tied 1-1], things might have been different.”

Boudreau lamented his goalies’ issues understanding they need to pitch shutouts if his team is to win.

“I can’t speak for them, but I’d venture to think that if I were a goalie I’d feel that I’d have to play perfect every night to have some success,” he said.

Next up is a battle of under-performing clubs as the Ducks move to Manhattan to face the New York Rangers who are giving up goals in bushel-loads.
