An opportunistic effort in the second period by the Arizona Coyotes helped them rally from a 209 deficit to the Anaheim Ducks as they defeated their hosts, 4-3 in overtime.
Chris Stewart and Ryan Kesler scored in the first period to give the Ducks a boost heading into the middle frame.
But poor play led to the Coyotes scoring three unanswered goals.
“We hung around the game and gave up the lead, but still thought we were doing a lot of things well,” Arizona coach Dave Tippett said. “We had the ability to stay with the game. We stayed with it and got a break at the end. The way we played all the way through is how we want to play.”
Max Domi scored twice in the second and Anthony Duclair added a goal to give the Ducks a 3-2 lead heading into the third.
“They were opportunistic,” Tippett said. “The guys played well all over the ice but when you get that opportunity to score, that’s what separates them. Max is one of those guys that finds an opportunity to score and takes it.”
Sami Vatanen tied the game up at three-all midway through the third.
“For whatever reason, we seemed a little out of sync tonight, as a line, as a unit,” the Ducks Ryan Getzlaf said. “[The overtime] was another example of it. I thought [Corey Perry] was coming inside. He went outside. That was the case all night. We played three good games together. I don’t know what happened tonight. As a line, we didn’t carry our weight.”
Getzlaf gave away the puck in the neutral zone in the extra session and Mikkel Boedker broke in to beat Frederik Andersen for the winner.
Anders Lindback stopped 33 for the win.
“One point is always good, but you’ve got to believe at home, against a divisional opponent, you want two points,” Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. “When you have a 2-0 lead after one, you should be able to close it out. We didn’t.”
