Ducks escape Carolina with 2-1 win in OT

With time winding down in Raleigh, Friday night, the Anaheim Ducks’ Pontus Aberg found the back of the net to tie their match with the Carolina Hurricanes and force extra time.

Ryan Getzlaf completed the rally when he scored 1:15 into the extra session to give the Ducks the 2-1 win.

Hampus Lindholm delivered a perfect pass to Getzlaf for a breakaway.

“As soon as you get a step on someone, it’s really dangerous,” Lindholm said. “I saw him take a few horse steps and he got ahead of (the defender), so it’s nice to see him put it in.”

John Gibson made 33 saves to get the win as the Ducks have won five of their last six games.

“We’ve had a knack for finding ways to come back and winning some games we thought we were out of and maybe shouldn’t have won. It’s says a lot about the character of our team that we can overcome rough patches and still be able to hold on and find ways to win,” Gibson said after the win.

Andrei Svechnikov scored late in the opening period for the Canes.

“We were overwhelmed in the first period,” Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle said. “We were slow and there was one puck and they wouldn’t give it to us. Luckily enough, our goaltender stood on his head.”

Carolina dropped to 12-9-4.

“A couple of guys I wasn’t happy with, they didn’t come to the party,” Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “But for the most part, our defense really battled in our end and our goalie was good again tonight.”

Curtis McElhinney made 27 saves in the loss.

Carolina went scoreless in six power play chances.

“We had a chance with the power play a couple times but we didn’t get anything going,” Justin Faulk said. “It’s on us. We had a great chance there with the power plays to get another one and finish them off.”
