In Glendale, the visiting Anaheim Ducks ended an 11-game schneid with a 5-0 thrashing of the Coyotes on Friday night.
Trevor Zegras scored off a lacrosse move to give the Ducks a 3-0 lead.
“I kind of saw the play and made it. There was nobody really behind the net, so I figured, `Pick it up,'” Zegras said. “If there was anybody in my way it was Sonny, which was pretty funny. I don’t think he even saw me, to be honest.”
It’s legal, acceptable, and counts, but it also is nothing more than a move to embarrass goaltenders.
“I think there’s a time for it and that was certainly one,” Ducks coach Dallas Eakins said. “He had lots of time to get it done. I think what might even be more impressive was Sonny’s ability to get out of the way and make himself super skinny.”
It seems that was a nice way of saying ‘knock it off’.
Isac Lundestrom hit for a double for Anaheim.
Anthony Stolarz made 22 saves in the Ducks win.
“We got pucks deep, played a simple game and did a good job of creating chances,” Stolarz said. “We haven’t been doing that lately, but we kind of wore them down.”
The Coyotes dropped to 21-42-5.
“The story of the game was our start,” Arizona coach Andre Tourigny said. “We had a few opportunities. If we could have buried them, it’s a different game. But then they got the fourth one and it became a monster.”
Gerry Mayhew and Cam Fowler added single markers in the Ducks win.
Karel Vejmelka got the start for Arizona and yielded three goals and made six saves before getting the hook.
Josef Korenar made 26 saves in relief.
“I wanted to change the momentum of the game a little bit,” Tourigny said of the goalie change. “They capitalized on their chances, obviously the third goal (by Zegras) there wasn’t much he could do.”
