Ducks edge Senators, 2-1, on a big trade away day Dostal makes 29 saves in the win

In Anaheim, Ryan Strome and Alex Killorn each scored their 10th goal of the season for the Ducks in a 2-1 win over the visiting Ottawa Senators on Wednesday.

Lukas Dostal made 29 saves in the win.

“What I see is a guy that’s incredibly competitive, he’s a gamer,” Ducks coach Greg Cronin said of Dostal. “He takes ownership of his game when things don’t go well. He’s the first one that will look in the mirror and say, ‘I could’ve done a better job.’ ”

Ottawa took a 1-0 lead at 2:44 of the opening stanza on a tip in by Mark Kastelic.

“It’s a good feeling getting on the board early and the rest of the game just comes to you,” Kastelic said.

Ottawa dropped to 25-32-3 off their firth straight loss.

“It’s just frustrating,” Kastelic said. “Everybody’s trying out there and their goalie was hot tonight.”

Strome tied the game when his attempted pass deflected off a Senators’ skate into the net at 4:42 of the middle frame.,

At 3:27 of the third period, Killorn  tipped a shot from Olen Zellweger at the blue line for the 2-1 lead, and final.

“It feels to get a tip-in goal,” Killorn said. “That’s how I scored a lot in the past with Tampa [Bay], so to get some greasy goals like that, it’s a good sign.”

Ottawa had 18 shots in the third period, after totaling just 12 through 40 minutes.

“We’re best when we get a lot of pucks to the net and we go to the net for rebounds and screens,” Ottawa interim coach Jacques Martin said. “We did in the third period and at the end of the game we ended up outshooting them by a fair margin, but I think we need to have more of a shooting mentality from the beginning.”

The Ducks traded Adam Henrique to the Edmonton Oilers earlier in the day.

“It’s a difficult day,” Killorn said. “It’s my first year (in Anaheim), but those two guys had such an impact on this team. It’s tough to replace guys like that. You understand why Edmonton grabbed guys like that to help them on their run, so it’s going to be tough for us here.”

Mads Sogaard made 14 saves in the loss.

“You always wish you could come up with an extra save to help the team out,” Sogaard said. “But I think after my last stint I just kind of more so realized that I don’t need to change anything, I just need to play like myself and play with confidence.”
