Ducks edge out Isles in 3-2 win

In Anaheim Wednesday night, Brock Nelson scored two goals for the New York Islanders, the second one cut the Isles deficit to 3-2 early in the third period.

But the Ducks managed to hold off the Islanders the rest of the way for the win.

John Gibson had 39 saves to pick up the win for Anaheim.

Andrew Cogliano, Rickard Rakell. and Patrick Eaves scored for the Ducks.

Ryan Getzlaf picked up two assists in his second game of the season.

“We keep getting guys back,” Eaves said.

The Ducks were not happy with their effort in the first period and were lucky to escape the opening frame with a 1-1 tie.

“We knew we didn’t play up to our potential (in the first period),” Rakell said. “Going into the locker room in a tied game, it was still a good feeling for us.”

Rakell’s goal in the middle frame helped the Ducks fend off the Isles and take the wind out of their sails heading to the third.

“We weren’t able to regather the same momentum we had in the first,” Nelson said. “It’s frustrating, but there were some good things and some good looks.”

Gibson made 13 of his saves while the Ducks were on the penalty kill.

“It’s tough when you’re crawling out of a hole the whole game,” Ho-Sang said. “I thought the guys played really well. I thought the guys competed and everyone was strong throughout the game. We had a couple bad bounces, but you can’t be down early.”
