PHILADELPHIA – It had to happen sooner or later. The Anaheim Ducks were flailing about this early season looking for their first win and Thursday night in Philadelphia had the Ducks claiming that win, 3-2, over the Flyers.
Ryan Garbutt scored the game-winner in the third period and John Gibson made 20 stops for the win.
Chris Wagner and Corey Perry also scored for Anaheim who were getting close to desperate for a victory on their road trip.
“It’s a good feeling,” Perry said. “The boys are laughing, the boys are smiling. It’s always nice when you can come into someone else’s building and get a win and get that first one out of the way.”
The Flyers had their chances but were 1-for-7 with the extra man.
Wayne Simmonds and Matt Read were the Philadelphia goal scorers.
The Flyers find themselves on a three-game skid.
“It’s two too many,” Simmonds said. “You lose one game and you hopefully should be able to turn it around. We’re in a little bit of a hole here, but it’s the beginning of the year, there’s no need to panic here.”
Steve Mason took the loss on 23 saves.
“We’re playing pretty good hockey. We lost a hard one tonight. There’s a lot of things we’d like to do better. When we wake up tomorrow, we’ll go right back to work with a confident group,” Flyers coach Dave Hakstol said after the game.
