Ducks drop 4-3 decision in Washington

In Washington, DC, the Capitals defeated the Anaheim Ducks, 4-3, on Monday night.

The Caps’ John Carlson forced extra time in the match with 23 seconds left in regulation.

“I think we kind of deserved the early [overtime/shootout losses], and then I think we’ve done better,” Carlson said. “But still, we expect a lot more out of ourselves in overtime.”

He was credited with the deciding goal in the skills competition.

Ilya Samsonov made 31 saves. in the Caps win.

Washington improved to 1-4-6.

“We gave up too much space,” Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette said. “We gave up too many point-blank chances right in front of our own net, and just things we haven’t done as a group.”

Josh Manson had a goal for the Ducks, he tied the game, 1-1, with nine seconds gone in the middle frame, after Tom Wilson staked the Caps to a 1-0 lead in the first period.

Carl Hagelin, restored the Washington lead with his first strike of the season.

The Ducks dropped to 13-8-5.

“We’re getting there. The last thing we want to do is get ahead of ourselves here. We know where we’re at,” Anaheim head coach Dallas Eakins said. “Our team is a resilient one, and they are hardworking. They just put their heads down and work.”

Sonny Milano and Vinni Lettieri  replied with goals for the Ducks to give them a 3-2 lead.

Trevor Zegras picked up two assists in the Ducks loss.

“They played extremely well,” Eakins said of the Milano-Zegras-Rickard Rakell line. “They were in sync and they are all dancing to the same tune. They have a great rhythm going. … I thought all three of those guys were excellent.”

 

John Gibson made 25 saves in the Ducks loss.

“It took us maybe a little bit to get going in the first period, but once we found our game, we were playing right with those guys,” Zegras said. “We just tried to kind of play their game. It comes down to a shootout, so you can’t really hang your head on that, but it would have been nice to get the extra point, for sure.”
