In Calgary, Rickard Rakell scored just past the midway point of the third period to help the Anaheim Ducks tie their match with the Flames at 2-2.
The goal forced extra time and Jamie Drysdale struck for the Ducks, late in the extra session for a 3-2 win.
“I just tried to work my way up the ice as fast as I could, get into a shooting position,” Drysdale said. “From there, Troy kind of did all the work, made a great fake, a great curl and drag and slipped it through the guy right on my tape backdoor. It was a heck of a play by him. He deserves a lot of credit for that.”
John Gibson made 41 saves to get the win.
“It’s awesome. ‘Gibby’ had to make a lot of huge saves for us,” Drysdale said. “He did a great job back there. When the time came, I think everyone on the bench knew we kind of step up for him and for each other, because we knew how bad we felt after last game (2-1 loss to Minnesota Wild on Friday). It feels real good to kind of get out of that one with a win. It’ll push us in the right direction moving forward on this trip and through the season.”
Elias Lindholm and Blake Coleman were the Flames’ strikers.
Coleman was making his debut with the Flames after serving a suspension.
“It’s obviously a good start,” Coleman said. “I was excited. I had my daughter in the stands. That’s kind of where my head went, honestly. She doesn’t come to all the games. She’s kind of been my good-luck charm. It’s a fun thing we have. But from the hockey side of it it’s another game, another goal that you’re just trying to help your team win. I would’ve liked to bury another couple chances tonight, but we just couldn’t get them to fall.”
Cam Fowler also scored for Anaheim.
“We were lucky that it was a one-goal game for such a long time, and honestly when we got that tying goal, it gave the whole group some energy,” Rakell said. “I think we had some good chances in the last period there [that] also gave us some confidence going into overtime. I thought we did a good job having the puck possession for most of the overtime, and then obviously ‘Terrs’ and ‘Drys’ made a great play on that winning goal.”
Jacob Markstrom made 24 saves in the loss.
