It has been difficult this season for the Anaheim Ducks to clear the .500 level of hockey.
Injuries have certainly hampered the Ducks but Monday night they got Ryan Getzlaf and Jakob Silfverberg back in the lineup.
Silverberg had a goal in his return and Logan Shaw and Derek Grant each added markers in a 3-2 win for the Ducks over the Carolina Hurricanes.
“Carolina came in and had a little bit more jump and was hungrier for the puck than we were in the early going. Once we got our game going, it kind of evened out the hockey game,” Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle said after the tight win.
Justin Williams and Victor Rask had the Canes goals as they tried to rally back in the third period.
“We’ve been playing good. We just have to get to that little next step. This is the stretch where you’ve got to start winning games,” Rask said.
John Gibson made 28 saves to pick up the win.
“We knew they were going to have a push in the third,” Gibson said. “I wanted to put a little bit of extra pressure on myself to make sure I rose to the occasion.”
Silfverberg scored on a breakaway with time winding down in the middle frame.
“It was a lucky break, I guess,” Silfverberg said. “I just tried to beat him with speed and a precise shot. It was nice to see that one go in. It’s about time I scored on a breakaway. [I’m 0-for-3] in the shootout this year.”
The loss was the fourth straight for the Canes.
“I didn’t think we gave up much at all in the first and then a tough break on their second one,” Canes head coach Bill Peters said. “Either the ice was soft or the puck was soft because [the puck] was bouncing.”

Scott Darling took the loss on 20 saves.
The Canes offense benefitted from goals down low but that’s something they are not doing on a regular basis.
“That’s where you’ve got to go to score,” Peters said. “The guys that aren’t getting inside the hash marks, in tight to the net, they’re not getting anything done offensively.”
Anaheim’s Corey Perry left the game in the second after a knee collision. There was not update after the game.
