In San Jose, Anthony Stolarz made 27 saves as the Ducks defeated the San Jose Sharks, 4-1.
“I just want to keep going out there and showing that I can play in this league,” Stolarz said. “Obviously there’s a lot more hard work ahead, but I’m happy with the last couple games here.”
With less than three minutes left in the game, Erik Karlsson spoiled the shutout bid with a strike for the Sharks.
“The most disappointing part is we didn’t gain any ground when the guys we’re chasing didn’t gain any ground,” San Jose head coach Bob Boughner said.
The Sharks have lost four of their five matches.
“Without picking on one guy or another, but if you ask Karlsson, he’ll tell you he’s better than that,” Boughner said. “We have to make better decisions with the puck and he’s guilty of that.”
Ryan Getzlaf scored in the first period for a 1-0 lead to the Ducks, and Derek Grant scored to give the Ducks a 2-0 lead in the middle frame..
“I was just trying to get to the front of the net and Manson made a good play shooting through the traffic,” Grant said. “I’ll take those any time I can get them.”
Alexander Volkov made it 3-0 in the second period.
“He’s extremely responsible, and we’re seeing that he has some quick hands,” Anaheim head coach Dallas Eakins said. “He and Grant are starting to feed off each other a little bit.”
Jakob Silfverberg scored off the power-play in the third period, there were 30 seconds left on the clock.
Josef Korenar made 23 saves in the loss, it was his first NHL start.
“There’s a lot of hockey left and we’re still in the hunt,” the Sharks’ Tomas Hertl said. “We have to put this behind us. We know we can beat [the] Minnesota [Wild on Friday]. We’ve done it before.”
