Ducks check Kings in 5-4 win

In Los Angeles, The Anaheim Ducks had control of their game with the Kinds on Tuesday night, but LA struck for three goals in the third period to force extra time, and the skills competition.

Kevin Shattenkirk rescued the Ducks with a regulation goal, and the deciding strike in the skills portion of the evening’s affairs, in a 5-4 win to the Ducks.

John Gibson made 30 saves for the Anaheim win.

“It’s hard to walk out of road games with two points, but we’re not naïve to the fact that there’s some things we’ve got to clean up to try and play better hockey with the lead and continue to put pressure on teams and not sit back,” the Ducks’ Cam Fowler said. “Credit to them for throwing everything they had at us in the third, but we still do feel like there’s some things we can clean up to maintain that a little bit better.”

LA dropped to 9-8-4.

Alex Iafallo and Dustin Brown scored 26 second apart in the third period to rally the Kings to a 4-4 tie.

“Things happen on the ice,” Anaheim head coach Dallas Eakins said. “If the other team gets close, they tie it up, they get within a goal, well, now you’ve got a choice to make. You can either get ready for your next shift, be ready for the next moment and be ready to go, or you can sit there and hang your head on the bench and be left in the past moments, and you’re just going to get crushed. Our guys have been unbelievably resilient and excellent in those situations.”

LA’s Adrian Kempe  started the rally in the third when he made the score 4-2 in favor of the Ducks.

“Our quality or level of play hasn’t fallen off dramatically. We haven’t got the results,” Los Angeles head coach Todd McLellan said. “Timely goals … timely defensive plays, maybe one on the power play would have helped somewhere along the line. But you got to find a way to get past close, and that’s where we are right now.”

Iafallo had two goals on the night.

The Ducks improved to 12-8-3.

Troy Terry, Fowler, and Isac Lundestrom  also scored for the Ducks in regulation.

Jonathan Quick made 32 saves in the LA loss.
