In Montreal, the Canadiens could not quite keep a good thing going on Thursday night.
After winning their first game under a new head coach, the Winnipeg Jets hung a 4-3, overtime loss on the Habs.
Pierre-Luc Dubois made an impact for Winnipeg when he potted the game-winner with 31 seconds left in the extra session.
“It started with a nice play by Nik Ehlers to slow the play down a bit, which created some confusion,” Dubois said. “And it’s easy to miss what Kyle Connor did in going to the net, which opened things up for me up top.”
Connor Hellebuyck made 33 saves to get the win.
The Jets are 5-0 in extra time games
“Everybody’s man-on-man, so if you’ve got two forwards and a defenseman both of those forwards are doing the same thing that if there’s three forwards on the ice,” Jets head coach Paul Maurice said. “But if you look at the roster at the end of the year the guys who score all the goals are forwards. So we’ll try to put as many forwards on the ice as we can.”
Tyler Toffoli, Brendan Gallagher and Corey Perry scored for the Habs.
“I mean obviously we’re trying to score goals and we had some good looks, some good opportunities,” Toffoli said. “But we’ve just got to find a way to win some of these games in overtime here.”
Montreal dropped to 10-6-6.
“It was good to get a goal back and keep us in the game,” Toffoli said. “And fortunate to get a point but definitely frustrating not getting two.”
Paul Stastny struck twice for the Jets who improved to 15-7-1.
“The first period we dominated, the second period they dominated, and the third period was pretty much back and forth and they scored a late goal,” Stastny said.
Mathieu Perreault also scored for the Jets in regulation.
Jake Allen made 23 saves in the loss.
“I think we’re doing some good things, it’s not all bad. We’re playing a pretty sound game for the most part,” the Canadiens’ Shea Weber said, ” Obviously there’s a couple mistakes there. Mistakes are going to happen in games and you want to limit those mistakes, obviously, and especially early. We didn’t get off to a really good start and Jake really saved our you-know-what at the start. He made a couple huge saves and let us settle in.”
