In St Louis, the Winnipeg Jets’ Pierre-Luc Dubois scored midway through extra time on Sunday to defeat the Blues, 4-3.
Dubois scored off a break out with Nikolaj Ehlers,
“It’s three guys out there that only have one thing in mind, that’s scoring a goal,” Dubois said of Ehlers and Kyle Connor. “For the other team, it’s a tough decision on who you want to send out there. I think in overtime, it’s a matter of time before somebody scores a goal. … The adrenaline’s going. It’s do-or-die in overtime.”
The breakout by the Jets came on a line change for the Blues.
“On the one line change there, the guy coming on the ice should probably stay high because we have another guy changing,” Blues coach Craig Berube said. “[Brayden] Schenn coming off the bench isn’t the issue. It’s the guy before that, OK? Because [Brandon] Saad’s changing, [Kyrou] can’t go running down there. He’s got to stay high with the two guys that are high. Then Schenn comes on the ice and he would’ve been right there with the guy.”
Connor and Ehlers had a goal in regulation.
Connor Hellebuyck made 28 saves in the Winnipeg win.
“I really liked our level, our desperation,” Jets coach Dave Lowry said. “We played with lots of urgency, we played with lots of … we had a purpose. I really felt that even giving up the goal late, we showed a lot of resiliency and stayed with our game, and we understand the value of getting that extra point.”
Schenn and Vladimir Tarasenko had strikes for the Blues.
“Overtimes have not been good this year for us (1-6),” Schenn said. “The guys get put on the ice to do it, myself included, and we’ve got to be better.”
The Jets moved to 27-23-10.
Mark Scheifele also scored for the Jets, his strike tied the game, 2-2, in the third period.
“We already had two point-blank chances before that, so I think the tide was already turning for us, Winnipeg’s Blake Wheeler said.
David Perron had a goal for the Blues, his marker gave St Louis a 1-0 lead.
“Just an entry, pretty much everyone touched the puck on the ice, and they challenged [Tarasenko], he threw it down to [Kyrou], and ‘Rouzy’ made a good play to me,” Schenn said. “It was nice to get a point, but we’ve got to find a way to get two.”
St. Louis dropped to 34-17-8.
Jordan Binnington made 33 saves in the Blues loss.
