Drummondville blasts Shawinigan 9-2

QUEBEC CITY P.Q. — Two of the three 20 years old veterans for Drummondville, Dany Masse and Yannick Riendeau, rose to the occasion for the second time in as many games with two goals each to lead the Voltigeurs to a 9-2 victory in Game 4 of their series with the Shawinigan Cataractes. Heading into Game 4, Drummondville had only three goals on sixteen power play opportunities. In Wednesday nights game, seven of Drummondville’s goals were scored on the power play going 7 of 16 on the power play. The Voltigeurs now takes a 3-1 series lead in the QMJHL finals. The series goes back to Marcel Dionne center in Drummondville on Friday, May 8. Tuesday nights loss in Game 3 forced Shawinigan to play their A game in Game 4. The Cataractes didn’t want to go back to Drummondville with their backs against the wall. Marco Cousineau prevented Shawinigan from getting the first goal of the game when the Drummondville netminder made a key save the Cataractes Pierre-Alexandre Vandal. The Cataractes had another golden opportunity to get the first goal when Drummondville was penalized three consecutive times, giving two five-on-three power plays to Shawinigan but were unable to get a real good scoring chance, and the Voltigeurs were able to kill off all of the penalties without any damage on the scoreboard. Often when a team misses an excellent opportunity to get on the scoreboard first, the other team usually scores on their next great scoring chance. That’s exactly what happened when Danny Masse was left alone in front of Shawinigan goaltender Timo Pielmeier with a man advantage and put the puck past him at 12:11 for a 1-0 lead. Trailing by only by one after the first twenty minutes gave Shawinigan Head Coach Eric Veilleux and his troops hope but the Drummondville offense came out swinging with five goals in the second period. A five-on-three power play was an excellent chance for Guy Boucher’s Drummondville team to add to their lead. Mike Hoffman got the Voltigeurs second goal of the game with at 4:12. Sean Couturier scored Drummondville third goal 24 seconds later with a man advantage. Shawinigan got on the board with their first goal of the game when Dave Labrecque completed the efforts of Mathieu Bolduc and Maxime Legault at 6:38. The Voltigeur’s regained their three goal lead when Yannick Riendeau came out of the penalty box and received a pass and went in on a breakaway didn’t miss his opportunity for his 25th goal of the playoffs 3:02 later. Riendeau got his second goal of the night at 16:08 when his wrist shot beat Gabriel Girard, who came in relief of Pielmeier after allowing first four goals and left the game at 9:40. Masse also with his second of the game, Drummondville sixth goal, 47 seconds later. Girard became the victim of three more goals by Drummondville thanks to Marc-Olivier Vachon (2:02), Maxime Frenette (3:50), and Samson Mahbod (5:32) to complete the scoring, all with the man advantage, in the third period. Shawinigan scored their second goal of the night when Maxime Legault put in his own rebound at 12:07, and was Shawinigan’s only power play goal on six attempts.
