Drummondville beat Quebec in OT Sevigny shorthanded goal made the difference

QUEBEC CITY, P.Q. — Leading most of the game, Drummondville needed to go in overtime after seeing their opponent tie the game in third period. Trying to kill a penalty playing four-on-three hockey Mathieu Sevigny took advantage of a turnover by Quebec defenseman Ross McDougall to score the goal that gave a 3-2 win to the Voltigeurs. It was Drummondville second win in three confrontations between the two teams.

Drummondville opened the scoring as Quebec veteran forward Jonathan Bourcier took the decision of coming back in his zone Voltigeurs left winger Ryan Verbeek surprised Quebec goaltender Evgeny Kiselev at 13:05.

Trailing by one Quebec successfully killed a four-minute penalty to teammate Dmitry Buynitskiy preventing Drummondville to add to their lead. Quebec defenseman Raphael Maheux and Voltigeurs right winger Nathan Hdgin dropped their gloves ending with an advantage to Quebec defenseman.

Quebec head coach Philippe Boucher thought his team had tied the game at one in first five minutes of second period on Matthew Boucher goal. Boucher who had beaten Voltigeurs goaltender Olivier Rodrigue saw referee Jonathan Trudel waved-off the goal, saying he whistled before the puck went in.

Trailing by one after forty minutes of play, after seeing the referee waving-off a goal, Quebec finally get on board with a good goal. Finding himself alone in the slot Already scoring a goal in his first game with his new team, Mathieu Ayotte scored his seventh of the season his second I as many game with his new team beating Drummondville goaltender Olivier Rogrigue over his left shoulder at 9:51.

That led both team to overtime. A penalty to Drummondville to Nicolas Guay with only 34 seconds gone in the fourth period was an excellent chance for Quebec to get the additional point.

Unfortunately for Remparts fans in the Videotron center Mathieu Sevigny took advantage of turnover create by Quebec defenseman Ross McDougall and scored the game winning goal giving to Voltigeurs their second wins in three meetings against Quebec. After winning 10-2 in last September 9, Drummondville signed a 3-2 overtime win.

“It was unbelievable moment, we didn’t played enough here, coming from here, it was a very exceptional moment for all my family and friends.” The author of the game winning goal Mathieu Sevigny said.

“As the standing is very thigh we will be seller this year again so it is very important to get all the wins we can get. We have had the lead after forty minutes in the game and the goal at the end was really an important one.” Concluded the son of former Montreal Canadiens Pierre Sevigny.

Traded to Quebec from Drummondville Benjamin Gagne faced off against former teammates in his second game with his new team and his first game in front of his new fans.

“It is a feeling I never had before because I never had been traded, it was fun because it has little competition against my former teammates. You want to prove to your former teammates you do well with your new team. I won’t say it staid amicable but it is fun to have that kind of competition because it wasn’t dirty but it will be rough.” Benjamin Gagne said after the game.

For Quebec head coach Philippe Boucher he wasn’t really happy about the goal his team been waved-off by referee Jonathan Trudel. But he also wasn’t happy about some of his player’s performances.

“Hockey was a game of momentum, in first it was little bit harder, they played better than us. We talked between ourselves after the first period, in second we have had four or five good shift and we scored, this get us back in the game, the goal turn things around. Unfortunately the goal has been waved-off. It (the goal) was very good but it changed a bit but fortunately we found a way to get back in the game. Unfortunately Ross (McDougall) wasn’t at the right place. Ross played very well for us in last three years he is with us, he played very strong hockey for us but tonight he tried to do a lot and it cost us at the end.” Quebec head coach Philippe Boucher said in his post-game press conference.

Quebec will play his last game in 2016 at home in a second games in as many nights hosting Gatineau Olympique on Saturday afternoon.
