BRAMPTON, ON – Chris Driedger made 34 saves and Cody Donaghey had the game-winning power play goal as the Brampton Beast defeated the Kalamazoo Wings 2-1.
The Kalamazoo Wings headed north of the border for game one of a double header against the Brampton Beast.
The Beast kept the pressure as the first period got underway. An early power play from Wings defensemen Mackenze Stewart gave Brampton an opportunity to take the lead.
After two minutes the Beast were unable to capitalize. But a beautiful pass from Jordan Henry and Chris Leveille to Brandon Marino at 14:05 gave Brampton a 1-0 lead.
At the end of the first period shots on goal were 14-8 in favour of the Beast. The Beast and Wings battled it out in the second with each team putting on the pressure.
Brampton drew three early penalties but were able to kill off the pressure from Kalamazoo. A nasty slash to Beast forward Alex Foster from Wings goaltender Joel Martin and Brampton was sent to the power play for a third time.
A pass from Marino and Henry to Donaghey who scored gave the Beast their first power-play goal of the game. After two periods of play, shots on goal were 28-21 in favour of Brampton. Tensions are high going into the third.
The Beast start the third period on a penalty kill after a late goalie interference call on Marino in the second. Both teams kept up the pressure in the third but after 60 minutes of play it is the Beast who come out on top. The final score of the game was 2-1 for Brampton. Driedger finished with a solid 34 saves.
