Draisaitl drives Oilers past Bruins, 2-1, in OT Draisaitl ties it late, wins in OT for Edmonton

In Boston, the visiting Edmonton Oilers were shut down for nearly 59 minutes on Tuesday night. The Bruins led, 1-0, into the late minutes of the third period.

Leon Draisaitl hit for his 31st of the campaign with 80 seconds left on the regulation clock.

That was enough to get the teams to extra time.

In the extra session, Draisaitl hit for his second of the game at 2:18 for a 2-1 win for the Oilers.

“Nice play by [McDavid] to me,” Draisaitl said. “Obviously, [I] got very lucky with that shot, but I’ll take it.”

Connor McDavid and Evan Bouchard assisted on each of the goals.

“I thought we had a lot of opportunities,” Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch said. “We played a good hockey team, and their goaltender made some great saves. Usually after a game, even when you lose, you’re disappointed but you’re thinking, ‘Oh, the process was good,’ and that’s kind of what I was thinking. And then we say we weren’t done yet.”

Stuart Skinner made 25 saves in the win.

Edmonton moved to 38-20-2 off its fifth straight win.

“The game’s over there (if that goes in), for sure,” the Oilers’ Mattias Janmark said. “So, that’s the kind of efforts we need, and I feel like everyone is bringing it.”

The Bruins dropped to 36-13-15, off their fifth loss in seven games.

The game was scoreless into the third period when Pavel Zacha scored at 4:26 of the third for a 1-0 lead to the Bruins.

“It wasn’t meant to be today,” Zacha said. “I think that’s something that, you know, we just have to keep pushing instead of kind of backing out a little bit the last five, 10 minutes of the third, and try to even score a goal and play more offensive.”

Boston’s Danton Heinen missed an empty net with two minutes left in the game, opening the door for the Oilers.

“I think [Zacha’s] looking to shoot more,” Bruins coach Jim Montgomery said. “It’s funny, he had a little bit of an injury there (in a 5-1 loss to the New York Islanders on Saturday), and he comes back from the injury and he’s simplified his game. He’s shooting more, he’s being more direct, and he’s scoring.”

Linus Ullmark made 25 saves in the loss.

“The feelings afterward feels more like a playoff game because it felt like we had it,” Ullmark said. “Slipped out of our hands in that final minute. I mean, I got to take ownership to it as well. There’s no reason for me to freeze that puck [on the previous play when I] could keep it rolling and maybe turn it around and score an empty-netter.”
