Dragons weekend preview of Aces match

Deeside Dragons coach Lol Paul is still in the market for a top-line defenceman, as he prepares for Saturday’s night’s visit of Altrincham Aces.

Victories over Blackburn and Widnes last weekend gave Deeside an early lead at the top of the Laidler Conference, following a summer of reorganisation.

But with other teams now targeting the Dragons as a ‘must-win’ game, Paul wants to firm up a defence that conceded five goals against Widnes on Sunday.Deeside dragons logo

He said: “I’m still experimenting with some of my lines, although I am 90 per cent happy with how they are. It might be that I pop a guy into the third line on Saturday, to give them a bit more ice time.

“It could even be that I adjust the first line a bit, but I am still looking for at least one defenceman. Up front, we are a force to be reckoned with, but I think we need a bit more depth in defence.

“I am looking for someone who can play on one of the top lines. I’ve got a couple of players in mind, so we’ll see how that goes over the next few days.”

The visit of Altrincham will present Deeside’s supremo with something of an unknown quantity, after the Manchester outfit were relegated from the Moralee Conference last year.

And Paul will take no chances with the league’s latest addition.

He added: “In some ways, it is hard to know what to expect against Altrincham. I don’t think they won a game last year, but they are still a threat.

“It will be the same with most teams this year, so we can’t take any chances. The league standings matter, because we’re at the top, but we won’t get a real indication until after about seven games.

“We’ve got to prepare for every game like we did last weekend. Every line was fantastic and showed some great movement. The whole team worked hard.”

Saturday’s game against Altrincham Aces, at Deeside ice Rink, faces off at 7pm.
