Columbus, GA – The Columbus River Dragons defeated the Athens Rock Lobsters in regulation on Friday night, 4-1.

Athens struck first early in the second period, capitalizing on a frenzy in the River Dragons’ defensive zone. Matt Petizian, goal tender for the River Dragons, lost his stick during the scramble.
Matt Garcia managed to get his stick on the puck and buried it at 2:01 in favor of the Rock Lobsters.
Justin MacDonald quickly struck back for the River Dragons on quick passes from Austin Daae and Ryan Hunter, tying the game at 1-1.
At 11:11 in the 3rd period, Ryan Hunter scored the game-winning point, marking his 100th professional point and putting the River Dragons ahead, 2-1.
Justin MacDonald and Alex Storjohann each scored empty net goals at 18:19 and 18:35, respectively, resulting in the River Dragons’ first regulation win over the Rock Lobsters of the season. Columbus had previously won in OT against Athens on December 20th, and lost in SO on December 21st. Matt Petizian has now achieved a win against Athens in regulation, overtime, and shootout, having made 34 saves during Friday night’s contest.
The River Dragons set off to face the Rock Lobsters again Saturday night in Columbus to conclude the weekend series with Hometown Heroes Night, honoring First Responders, Educators, Medical Personnel. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
