Columbus, GA – The dragons and black bears meet each other on the ice for the first time this season. The black bears are trying to recover from a losing streak spanning over the last three games while the dragons are attempting to hold first place in the league. From fog, fire alarms, goals, penalties, chants, and an overtime, this night had everything that you could imagine plus plenty of extra to make it a suspenseful game.
The first period was slow going as the fog on the ice was making it difficult for players, refs, and fans to see anything going on from the end of the rink. The players would skate around the ice a few times to try to get rid of the fog. It felt as though it was slow and individual NASCAR race during these periods. The goalies on each side deserve credit for not allowing a goal during the first period with how foggy things would get on the ice.
The bears would be the first to strike with Yates scoring at the 7:08 mark in the second period. The dragons would respond with a power play goal of their own by Greco knocking one in at the 12:12 mark. The dragons thought they got a second goal of the period at the 15:25 mark, but the referee declared it a no goal. The teams would go into intermission tied up with ones on the scoreboard.
Bears would take the lead again in the third period with Thompson getting on in at the 0:48 second mark into the period. The dragons would respond with a 5-3 power play goal by Fregeau at the 14:04 mark to tie up the game again. The period would end with a dragon player in the box and a tied-up game.
With the dragon player being in the penalty box with time still to serve, the overtime period would start off with a 4-3 advantage for the bears. The dragons would have a couple huge saves before a break away steal right at the penalty time finishes. Pietrantonio would skate past the defenders with another dragon in hot pursuit to put the puck into the bears’ net at the 1:00 mark in overtime. The dragons would win in overtime with 3-2 being the final score.
The third star went to Greco for his goal.
The second star went to Fregeau with his goal.
The first star went to Pietrantonio for his game winning goal.
