MANCHESTER, NH – Nic Dowd scored the game-winning goal in overtime to send the Monarchs to a 2-1 victory in Game 2 of the Calder Cup Finals on Sunday. It marked Manchester’s second straight win in overtime and gave them a 2-0 advantage in the series.
“Well, we are up two, but again this game was decided in overtime,” Head Coach Mike Stothers said. “It is not going to be easy for either team and I thought they played much better than they did yesterday. I knew they were a good team. We’re going into Utica and we are going to have to stay together as a collective group.”
The goal was Dowd’s first game-winning goal in his playoff career and was his fifth tally of these playoffs.
Zach O’Brien opened the scoring with a power play goal at 19:05 of the first period. The goal for O’Brien was his third of the playoffs.
Nicklas Jensen scored his third of the playoffs at 1:12 of the second period to tie the game at one.
The third period was scoreless, with Manchester outshooting the Comets, 8-3 in the frame.
Nic Dowd ended the game at 5:36 of the overtime period when he scored on his own rebound right in front of the net.
These teams will meet again in Game 3 on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.
