In Chicago, the Blackhawks blew a 3-1 lead in the middle frame on Sunday but managed a 4-3 win over the Calgary Flames when Max Domi hit for the game-winner with 64 seconds gone in extra time.
“That was a great game,” Domi said. “First period, we kind of took it to them. Second period, we fell off a little bit, but [goalie Alex] Stalock was unbelievable once again. We found ways to be pretty good overall in our own zone when we had to be, and then gave ourselves a chance to win in the third. And then overtime, anything can happen, so it was a fun one tonight for sure.”
Lukas Reichel, who set up the winner, had a goal and three points in the win.
“Yeah, it was a dream come true,” Reichel said. “First NHL goal is a pretty special moment for me, and I want to keep buzzing. That’s it.”
Chicago improved to 10-25-4
Alex Stalock made 44 saves in the Blackhawks win.
The Blackhawks held a 3-1 lead in the middle frame and surrendered two goals to the Flames with Jonathan Huberdeau scoring 27 seconds after the Blackhawks had taken their two-goal lead, and Nazem Kadri potting the tying goal at 9:40 of the second.
“Obviously, their goaltender had a great performance,” Kadri said. “Just not good enough from the get-go. That put us behind the eight ball a little bit. We had opportunities to win the game and just couldn’t cash in.”
The Flames dropped to 19-14-8.
“Should win,” Calgary coach Darryl Sutter said. “Take one penalty, score two power-play goals, and only give up a handful of shots. Should win the game.
“We got to take the point. We didn’t skate (on Saturday) because the Harlem Globetrotters were playing in our building. We had to travel. We couldn’t skate this morning because it’s a 6 o’clock game. We better be thankful that we got a point because a lot of our young players didn’t show up. Lack of preparation. You’ve got to take them by the hand, some of these guys.”
Reichel’s goal came in the first period, and gave the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead.
“I think the idea of bringing him up now is probably he earned a spot,” Richardson said. “It’s not just a flash, you know, coming up for a game or two. I think it’s just to give him an extended time to see if he can sustain what he’s doing right now. I’m sure he’s driven to do that. We haven’t really talked about it.
“We got a few days now. We have [Monday] off, and we got a couple days of good practice, and we can show some video and all the good things we’ve done over the last few games, and he’s part of that, so we expect him to be here.”
Calgary replied with a strike from Elias Lindholm for a 1-1 tie.
“I think overall we’ve got to execute better,” Lindholm said. “We had a lot of chances, just got to not let them hang around for that long and bear down and get a couple goals. We should get the win, but that’s the way it goes. Overall, there are things we can do better. We left [Markstrom] out there. There are a lot of things that aren’t great, but still I think we did a lot of good things. Overall, it’s tough.”
Chicago built their 3-1 lead on a first period goal from Colin Blackwell, and a strike from Philipp Kurashev with 33 seconds gone in the second period.
Jacob Markstrom got the start for the Flames, and surrendered three goals and made eight saves before getting the hook.
Dan Vladar made 13 saves in the loss.
