PHILEDELPHIA – The New Jersey Devils were supported on offense by Kyle Palmieri. Who picked up a goal and three points and Travis Zajac’s two power play goals in a 4-1 win over the host Flyers Thursday night.
“All I had to do was put my stick on the ice,” Zajac said. “Great plays by [Palmieri]. He’s good back there on the point. He’s got his head up and he’s smart with the puck.”
Andy Greene closed out the scoring for the Devils with an empty-netter.
Cory Schneider got the win for New Jersey with 27 saves.
“We talked about that in between the first and second period; we’re facing the same test and we have to have a better response than we did the other night,” Devils coach John Hynes said. “We did.”
Steve Mason made 29 saves in the loss as the Flyers’ three-game point streak came to a thud.
“We didn’t start with the puck very much, that’s one area we could look at in the 60 minutes,” Flyers coach Dave Hakstol said. “That’s the first area of every play. That’s an area we’ve gotta improve.”
For the Flyers it was a disjointed effort with little focus on the ice or on the bench.
“A lack of focus on those changes, there’s no excuse for that,” forward Jakub Voracek said. “It should happen twice a year, not twice a game. It came back to bite us in the [butt] in the end, and there’s no excuse for that.”
That lack of focus led to two bench minors for too many men on the ice.
“I’ve gotta communicate better on the bench,” Hakstol said.
