Devils fall to Phantoms in O/T thriller

Sunday night, Peterborough Phantoms S2 played host to the travelling Solent Devils, with the Devils coming in off an away win to Basingstoke Buffalo the week before, and the Phantoms riding high after winning their first two games of the season.

The first period, saw only two penalties, both served by Jonathan Brammall for the Phantoms, one after eleven minutes for crosschecking, and then again with thirty seconds left for delay of game.

During the first period, the Phantoms outshot the Devils 12 – 8, but neither team could find the back of the net, sending them in to the break with the score still 0-0.

The Devils were still on a powerplay at the start of the second, but couldn’t break through and Brammall returned to the ice with the game still tied.

The Devils received another powerplay a few minutes later, as Dale Jowett sat two minutes for boarding.  The Phantoms managed to hold it together until Jowett returned to the ice, and the game continued 0-0.

Seconds after Jowett returned to the ice, Nathan Long got the puck to Phantoms captain, Clint Herring, who in turn found Shaun Yardley, Yardley finally managing to break the deadlock, beating Christian Cole and putting the home side in the lead almost exactly half way through the game.

As play continued, the two number 10 shirts had a few words with each other, Alex Trendall being given 2+2 for the Devils, Nathan Pollard getting the same for the Phantoms.

While in the penalty box, the Devils managed to rally, with veteran Drew Campbell levelling the score with his unassisted goal.

It was then the Phantoms turn to have a powerplay, as Rhys McCormick picked up a two minute penalty for tripping.  The Devils, however, remained strong in front of their own goal, and prevented the Phantoms from capitalising on their advantage.

With thirty five seconds left in the period though, Kenny Bavin pushed the Phantoms back in to the lead, assists coming from Yardley and Herring.

As the dying seconds of the period ticked down, Campbell and Callum Medcalf had a small altercation, each earning a 2+2 penalty, seeing them miss the start of the third period.

As the minutes of the third period were being eaten up, the Devils were pushing the attack more and more, trying to find the goal to tie things up, when Richard Facey gave Campbell the help he needed to tie the game once more.

Just under ten minutes remained on the clock, both teams now trying to break through and crack the others defence, while trying to make sure they didn’t leave an opening of their own, and with time running out neither managed to end the stalemate, forcing the game in to overtime.

The Devils managed four shots on target against Daniel Lane, where the Phantoms only managed three against Cole, however, 2:57 in to overtime, one of those three made its way past Cole, ending the game with the home side as the victors.

Solent Devils return to Gosport for their first home game of the season, this coming weekend, where they will host the Lee Valley Lions, face off at 5pm.
