Devils end season, prepare for play-offs

The Solent Devils hoped to continue their thundering run towards the end of the regular season in style at the weekend, as they had a double header against Oxford City Stars on Saturday and were travelling to face Invicta Dynamos on Sunday.

As the game began in Gosport, the Stars were wanting to get back to winning ways following their previous results against the Devils, but you could tell the Devils had been enjoying the huge wins they had been getting since the start of the year.

As the puck went back and forth, the two teams were giving a true show to the fans, with fast and passionate hockey.

The Devils, however, struck first.  Half way through the first period and Joe Edwards sitting in the Stars penalty box, captain Alex Cole and Richard Facey helped Drew Campbell start the scoring.

Minutes later though, Oxford struck back.  Assisted by Jaroslav Cesky and Dominic Hopkins, Alan Green levelled the score.

The second period for the Devils included three further power play goals, Aiden Doughty, Mark Pitts, and Matt Lawday all finding the back of the net, sending the two teams to the second break with the score reading 4-1.

Right at the start of the third, Oxford pushed for a come back, and within the first minute of the period Brendan Baird bagged himself a short handed goal.

This was quickly followed up by Matt Jordan making it 4-3, and Oxford looking for one more goal to tie the game up.

Christian Cole and the Devils defence were enough, and they saw out the rest of the period keeping the score from changing any further and giving the Devils their fifth win in a row.

This lead the team to their Sunday game, their last of the regular season, on the road against Invicta Dynamos.

The Dynamos started off on full charge, Ashley Jackson beating Christian Cole just thirty eight seconds in to the game.  It took almost the whole period, but Aiden Doughty managed to get the goal back for the Devils.

Half way through the second period, with Alex Cole in the sin bin for slashing, Dynamos captain, Callum Fowler put the home side back in the lead.  Minutes later, Nicky Lewis extended that lead further, making it 3-1 to Invicta.

Try as they might, the Devils couldn’t get past Damien King in between the pipes for Invicta, and to finish the game off, Tom Ralph picked up an unassisted goal, making the score 4-1 just in time for the buzzer.

This meant the Devils finished the regular season in sixth place, and will face Streatham in the play-offs.  The first of these two games will be played in Gosport, Saturday 25th March.
