Devils disappoint Steelers, 3-1

It wasn’t for lack of effort and creation of chances, but the Steelers suffered their first defeat of the Elite League season at the hands of the Devils who came out victorious by three goals to one at the Utilita Sheffield Arena tonight.

With Ostlund recovering from a ‘freak’ injury, netminding duties automatically fell to Matthew Greenfield who was backed up tonight by Jordan Mclaughlin. Davey Phillips, Kevin Schulze, Daniel Ciampini, Scott Allen and Evan Mosey would make up the rest of the starting six for the Steelers.

Before the puck dropped tonight, we took time to remember Queen Elizabeth II and all that she has done for us over the last 70 years. And for the first time, and hopefully for many more years to come, we sang God Save The King.

In what seems to be becoming a bad habit which requires stamping out quickly, the Steelers were down by one goal within five minutes as Sam Duggan (4.02) picked up a loose puck at the Steelers goal line, took the puck across Greenfield and finished high. The Devils taking a one goal lead into the second period.

The Devils were up by two goals in the 22nd minute courtesy of Josh Brittain (22.37) assisted by Sam Duggan as he moved to 1+1 on the night. Brittain with a nice finish low to Greenfield’s right as Duggan won the puck back at the Steelers blue line and fed Brittain in clear on Greenfield.

The Steelers were back within one goal shortly afterwards as Adam Raska picked up his first goal of the regular season (26.34), assisted by McNally and J Phillips. A nice passing move between the three of them with Raska being found at the back post to finish well.

The 30th minute saw a few players being sat in the box for a range of roughing penalties as Connolly seemed to be double-teamed by Brandt and Sanford; Petgrave coming to the aid of Connolly and strangely finding himself called for the same offence.

The Devils found their two goal lead again before the end of the period was out as Sam Duggan picked up his second goal of the night to go 2+1 (32.16). A nice finish from between the face-off circles to beat Greenfield up high.
